Syrian Rue seeds
Syrian rue(peganum harmala)
Amount: 10 gram
Dose: 2 doses
Ingredients: The primary active ingredients in P. harmala are harmine and harmaline.
Effect: Common use of Syrian rue has the effect of a psychopharmacological tool, making otherwise inactive plants active. Sometimes Syrian rue is used to strengthen and prolong the effects of substances that are active by themselves. Syrian rue prevents the breakdown of monoamine neurotransmitters by inhibiting the action of monoamine oxidase enzymes, a process known as MAO-inhibition. This renders substances like DMT and 5-MeO-DMT orally active and makes a psilocybin mushroom experience last longer and become stronger. A small number of people is experimenting with the effects of only Syrian rue infusions or smoked seeds. The effects of low doses are sometimes referred to as ‘the harmala buzz’, as it tends to cause a buzzing feeling throughout the head and body. This is also the initial stage for most people taking a higher dose, though it generally unfolds into a stronger experience associated with nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting. Also, psychedelic effects, such as visual and auditive distortions and mystical phenomena, seem to be common for some people.
How to use: It is possible to consume the seeds directly, by grinding them with your molars. Let the ground seeds have interplay with your saliva for half a minute up to a couple of minutes and swallow. Another way is to grind the seeds with a morter and put the powder in gelcaps. With these methods none of the active ingredients gets lost in the preparation process. For a Syrian rue only experience, doses are still experimental. People should start with 1 gram to see how they react. 5 grams is a high dose for most people. For potentiating a normal or high dose of oral DMT, taking 3 grams of seeds 15 to 60 minutes prior to the DMT is an established method. Taking more usually results in more physical discomfort and no stronger effect. The experience will last around 4 hours. The same method can be used prior to eating mushrooms, which will make the mushrooms 1½ to 2 times stronger. It also adds 1 to 3 hours to the duration. Another common preparation method, which is easier on the stomach and causes less nausea in general, is to make a hot water infusion. Part of the active ingredients can easily get lost in the process of this method, so add 1 to 2 grams to the doses mentioned earlier. 150 ml of water and 50 ml of lemonjuice per person is used. Simmer the finely ground seeds for 15 to 30 minutes on the lowest fire on your stove and strain the liquid, which is then ready for consumption. And finally, many people still use these seeds as an incense. In high amounts this can also cause MAO-inhibition, albeit of shorter duration in comparison with oral ingestion.
Warning: Peganum harmala contains MAO-inhibiting substances. This means it can be very dangerous when combined with certain foods or other psychoactives that are totally harmless when taken by themselves.

- Side Effects
Syrian rue is a plant that grows in parts of the United States, Asia, Africa, and Europe. The seeds of the plant can cause hallucinations and have stimulant effects when taken by mouth.
Despite some serious safety concerns, people use Syrian rue for osteoarthritis, terminating a pregnancy, cancer, menstrual pain, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
In manufacturing, the Syrian rue seeds are used to produce a red dye to color rugs.
How does it work?
Syrian rue seed contains chemicals called beta-carbolines. These chemicals cause many different effects in the body, including stimulant effects and hallucinations. These constituents also seem to have effects that are similar to certain medicines used to treat Alzheimer disease.
Uses & Effectiveness ?
Insufficient Evidence for
- Osteoarthritis. Applying 4 drops of olive oil containing Syrian rue seed extract to the affected joint seems to reduce pain and tenderness in people with osteoarthritis. But it doesn’t seem to help with stiffness.
- Absence of menstrual periods (amenorrhea).
- Ending a pregnancy (abortion).
- Menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea).
- Parasite infections.
- Parkinson disease.
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
- Other conditions.
More evidence is needed to rate Syrian rue for these uses.
Side Effects & Safety
When taken by mouth: Syrian rue is POSSIBLY UNSAFE in low doses. Taking 3-4 grams of Syrian rue seeds can cause hallucinations and stimulant effects.
Syrian rue is LIKELY UNSAFE in higher doses. Serious side effects affecting the nervous system, heart, liver, and kidneys, as well as death, have been reported in people who consumed large amounts of Syrian rue seeds.
When applied to the skin: Syrian rue is POSSIBLY SAFE when diluted in olive oil.
Special Precautions & Warnings:
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Syrian rue is LIKELY UNSAFE when taken by mouth during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Syrian rue can make a pregnant woman go into labor. Avoid use.
Slow heart rate and heart disease: Syrian rue contains the chemicals harmaline and harmine. These might cause complications in people who have a slow heart rate or heart disease.
Blockage in the stomach: Syrian rue contains the chemicals harmaline and harmine. These chemicals might cause complications in people who have a blockage in the stomach.
Liver disease: Liver damage has occurred in people who have taken Syrian rue. People with liver diseases, including hepatitis, should avoid taking Syrian rue.
Stomach ulcers: Syrian rue contains the chemicals harmaline and harmine. These chemicals might cause complications in people who have stomach ulcers.
Lung conditions: Syrian rue contains the chemicals harmaline and harmine. These chemicals might cause complications in people who have lung conditions, including asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Seizures: Syrian rue contains the chemicals harmaline and harmine. These chemicals might cause complications in people who have seizures.
Surgery: Syrian rue can affect levels of serotonin in the brain. In theory, Syrian rue might interfere with surgical procedures. Discontinue Syrian rue use at least 2 weeks before a planned surgery.
Blockage in the urinary tract: Syrian rue contains the chemicals harmaline and harmine. These chemicals might cause complications in people who have a blockage in the urinary tract.
