Why is MCT oil in our tinctures? MCT acts as a carrier for CBD, increases the bioavailability of our tinctures, and offers a plethora of benefits for your dog. For people or pets to get optimum benefits from CBD, it needs a carrier oil. Saturated fat is best because of its unique molecular structure composed of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are unique in that they bypass the regular digestive process and are absorbed directly into the bloodstream. CBD and MCT Oil Organic Coconut oil has many health benefits. Here are 9 Reasons to Consider giving MCT Oil from coconuts to your Dog.
MCT Oil for Dogs: CocoTherapy
You’ll notice in our own tinctures, as well as many others, that MCT oil is one of the main ingredients, in addition to the CBD. Why would MCT oil be incorporated into the product? What are the benefits of MCT oil for dogs? Coconut oil is made of saturated fat, so it seems like we would want to steer clear. However, while saturated fats are generally considered bad fats, not all saturated fats are the same. While most saturated fats are comprised of long chain fatty acids, MCTs differ in their carbon length.

What is MCT Oil?
MCT, or medium-chain-triglycerides, contain medium-length fat chains. Due to their short length, they are easily digestible and assist with the absorption of nutrients. They also contain beneficial acids known as lauric, capric, caprylic, myristic, and palmitic acids.
MCT oil is commonly extracted from coconut oil ; 63% of the fat in coconut oil contains MCTs. It can also be found in palm oil and various dairy products.
MCT and CBD
MCT oil protects CBD from being completely broken down by the digestive system before reaching the bloodstream . CBD is fat-soluble and is known to be most effective when it’s taken with saturated fats. MCT acts as the vehicle to transport CBD where it needs to go to help the body.
Once CBD reaches the liver, it’s broken down into very small components that are not used effectively in the body. MCT carries most of the CBD into the bloodstream so it’s not damaged by metabolic processes.
The goal of a high-quality CBD tincture is to have high bioavailability. Bioavailability refers to the efficiency with which a therapeutic compound is absorbed into the bloodstream. This is important because it affects how much to give in one dose, and how quickly your pet can feel the effects.
Benefits of MCT Oil for Dogs
MCT isn’t only beneficial as a carrier for CBD. MCT carries a wide range of benefits to your pet. Compared to other fats, MCTs are absorbed faster and are more likely to be utilized as a source of energy, rather than stored as fat. The rapid use of MCT by the body makes it an excellent source of energy for the brain. In fact, MCTs have been shown to be effective in enhancing cognitive function in both senior dogs and humans.
According to research published in the British Journal of Nutrition , “ the cognitive assessment data showed that the performance of the MCT-supplemented group was superior to that of control group in the land-1 and land-2 tasks, and the egocentric learning and reversal task and on the variable object components of the attention protocol.” The study went on to state “the present study shows that supplementation of MCT in aging dogs can significantly increase blood ketone body concentrations under fed conditions and improve age-related decline in cognitive function by providing an alternative source of brain energy in old healthy dogs. The MCT-containing diet had no adverse effects on CBC and blood chemistry.”
In addition to serving as food for the brain, researchers have found benefits of MCT oil for dogs with seizures, as well as reduction of gastrointestinal inflammation, and as effective antimicrobial and antibacterial agents.
They are also useful in cancer therapy . Due to their ease-of-digestibility, they provide cancer patients with excellent nutrition that supports not just one but many body systems.
Increasing Shelf Life
Not only does a lack of MCT decrease the quality of the tincture, but a tincture that doesn’t contain MCT is known not to last as long as one that does. We want to keep our high-quality, full-spectrum CBD oil as long as possible. But, like other natural products, there is an approximate amount of time that can pass before it’s labeled as no longer viable. At CBD Dog Health, our products (they do contain MCT) remain viable for approximately two years when unopened. Once they have been opened, we recommend a shelf life of one year.
Two sisters, Charisa Antigua and Carmina O’ Connor, began an organically-grown, pure coconut oil producing organization. On our podcast, ‘It’s A Dog’s Life with Angela Ardolino’ , we had the pleasure of speaking with the founders. We are happy to utilize CocoTherapy’s coconut oil in our salves and their MCT in our tinctures.
The founders own a USDA-certified organic and non-GMO verified farm and facility in the Philippines. They p roduce all of their coconut oil from start to finish using techniques they learned from their grandmother. Charissa and Carmina come from three generations of a coconut-producing family.
Like CBD oil, not all coconut oil is created equal. There are certain aspects a potential buyer should look for. Are they 100% organically grown? Can it be traced back to the farm? While traceability is extremely difficult (if not impossible) for many commercially produced coconut oils, CocoTherapy Virgin Coconut Oil and MCT Oils are 100% certified organic and Non-GMO Verified, with a lot # assigned to every batch produced. This enables every batch to be traced back to its crop of origin whenever necessary.
The levels of beneficial acids must also be very high in order to be scientifically therapeutic. This is accomplished not only via the processing methods, but by the type of coconuts used and harvesting schedules as well.
According to Ms. Antigua, “coconuts take 12 months to ripen on a tree, but a lot of companies harvest their coconuts too early, after three or four months.” She continued to explain, “you won’t get all of the nutrients if the coconut was removed from the tree prior to ripening. Our coconuts are also freshly grated and wet-milled , and the coconut milk is pressed from fresh coconuts . A lot of other coconut oils are made from dry coconuts, which are stored and sent to facilities hundreds of miles away, and then they rehydrate them with water and then make the oil with the coconuts that were rehydrated. Which means they are made with diluted coconut milk and are rehydrated with possibly contaminated water.”
Following the launch of CocoTherapy in 2009, Antigua and O’Connor have continued to teach others about the importance of therapeutic-grade coconut oil. You can learn more about their process by listening to the podcast here .
Every component in our tinctures is included to further benefit your pet. MCT oil is one of the main critical ingredients to act as a carrier for CBD, for overall health and well-being, and for antimicrobial/antibacterial purposes. MCT increases the bioavailability of our products to ensure your pet receives the most effective, therapeutic tincture.

He graduated from Dr. Sulak’s Healer Cannabis Dosage Protocols and Methodologies. Despite his confidence and talent, Hernando found himself struggling after graduation. In a profession where anxiety is absolutely crippling, he wasn’t getting the kind of work he knew he should be getting. Thankfully, during one of his many visits to Angie in Florida, she introduced him to CBD and he has never looked back. Four years later, he had opened two first national tours, been on Broadway, worked with Cyndi Lauper, Brendan Urie, Andrew Loyd Webber, and many others. And now – Hernando is Co-Owner of CBD Dog Health. CBD was life-changing for both of them, and he could not be happier to be in a business doing something he loves so much that helps dogs like Blanche live a happy, stress-free life.
Bioavailability: Why the Best Pet CBD Oil Contains MCT OIl | Blooming Culture
Bioavailability seems to be a buzz word that keeps getting brought up in the wellness industry. So what does it have to do with your pet’s CBD oil?
Besides babies, name something that needs to be carried. Give up? It’s CBD. Yes, in order for people or pets to reap the optimum benefits from CBD , it needs a carrier. So what does that mean?
To explain it, you must first understand a little bit about pharmaceutical chemistry. Most people think that just by ingesting or injecting medication, it automatically and magically goes to the spot that needs healing. But, it’s much more complex than that.
Different brands use different carriers and there’s a big difference in their effectiveness. So step one is to identify the carrier of your CBD by reading the back label of listed ingredients and any sourcing information. The most common carriers you will find are olive, hemp seed, coconut, and MCT oil.
Fat is Good for CBD
So which is the best one? It’s all about which one most easily interacts with the cannabinoids of the CBD oils . They are fat-soluble which means that when they break down, they are stored in fat rather than water. Because of this, cannabinoids are most effective when consumed with fat, thus increasing their bioavailability. In other words, molecularly, the higher the lipid (or fat) content of the oil they are in, the better and more efficiently they can dissolve.
Which Fat is Best?
But, it’s not just any fat that makes the difference. Saturated fat is best because of its unique molecular structure composed of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are unique in that they bypass the regular digestive process (intestines to the liver to the bloodstream) and are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
What is the Best Carrier? MCT Oil is the Preferred Carrier for CBD
MCT oil metabolizes very differently than any other saturated or even polyunsaturated fat. It does not get processed by the liver and does not get easily stored as fat. Also, it is the only natural oil that is 100% made up of MCTs which can break down and “carry” more CBD molecules to cells for absorption by the Endocannabinoid System in the body. MCTs are super fuel for your cells and they burn MCTs for energy while boosting metabolism and supporting the immune system, while aiding in hormone balance.
If you’re looking to give your best friend the best quality brand, then remember two things. You must trust where you are sourcing your pet CBD from.
When it comes to MCT oil … it’s all about
CARRYING, DELIVERY, and ABSORPTION
For most of the 20 th century, MCTs were only consumed from natural food sources like butter and coconut oil, and not much else was known about these fats. In the 1980s, Dr. Vigen Babayan of the Nutrition Laboratory at Harvard University developed a process to produce MCTs in large quantities. The end product of this newly discovered process was called MCT oil.
9 Reasons to Consider MCT oil for You and Your Dog.
Already a popular supplement, MCT oil is used in human nutrition for many reasons. Because of this, dog owners often ask me about MCT oil for dogs. As supplements go, it has some controversy as it is almost all saturated fat. However, the benefits of MCT oil tend to outweigh any risks. First let’s get to know what MCT oil is and where it comes from. You will see MCT oil is not only safe for dogs but there are many reasons to consider MCT oil for you and your dog.
What Is MCT Coconut Oil?
MCT stands for medium-chain triglyceride, which refers to the length of the chains of fats. Some fats are shorter chain fats and others are longer chain fats. Longer chain fats are what we are most familiar with (canola oil, olive oil, and fish oil). These fats require a host of pancreatic enzymes to break them down properly. MCT oil is different.
Each MCT(medium chain triglyceride) is made up of 6 to 12 carbon atoms. It is important to receive MCTs in your diet as your body utilizes them differently to long-chain fatty acids. After leaving your gut, MCTs head to the liver, where your body can use them for energy or turn them into ketones. In other words, your body uses the calories from MCTs immediately, instead of storing them as fat. It is useful for your body to have ketones, as the brain can transform them into energy later, rather than needing to rely on glucose or sugar. MCT oil requires almost no work on the part of the pancreas. This is beneficial for people or pets with pancreatic issues.
Finally, MCT supplements usually use coconut as the source for their oil. This is because more than 50 percent of all the fat in the fruit comes from MCTs. Other sources of MCTs include dairy products and palm kernels, but they have a much lower percentage of MCTs than coconuts.
Benefits of MCT oil
1. Quick Energy for the mind and body
Because of shorter structure of MCT’s they are rapidly absorbed by the body with very little work by the gallbladder, liver or pancreas. They convert quickly to energy or into substances called ketones which are able to cross into the brain and supply it with valuable fuel. Much less of MCT’s are stored as fats and in fact have shown in some studies to increase calorie burn by as much as 5%.
2. Improved Brain and Memory
We mentioned above that the brain can use MCTs for energy. This can actually lead to better brain function and improved memory. For instance, research suggests that people with Alzheimer’s may see increased thinking ability when they take MCT oil. This is due to their brains’ capability to utilize ketones from the oil more effectively than it could use glucose.
3. Nutrient Absorption
We can eat all the good foods we want but without proper absorption of nutrients, we aren’t getting all that we could be. Fat soluble vitamins like A, E, D, K as well as minerals like magnesium and calcium depend on saturated healthy fats like MCT’s to help transport them to their final destinations. Organic MCT coconut oil was carefully selected in our Pet CBD for proper delivery of valuable cannabinoids and terpenes to your pet.
4. Seizure Reduction
Seizures in humans and dogs are challenging to manage and in some cases they are unmanageable even with medications. Often the medications taken to reduce seizure frequency lower the overall quality of life in a drastic way. So any dietary help on top of that would be highly advantageous. Fortunately MCT coconut oil is able to help in this regard too. In a small human study it was found that adding MCT oil to the diet reduced seizures as much as 42%. In another study on dogs, adding MCT oil to the diets of dogs already on seizure medication reduced seizures up to 48% over a 90 day span. This is a fantastic reason to consider MCT oil for dogs with seizures.
5. Insect Repellant
Until recently, the most effective insect repellents all contained the chemical DEET. The chemical is popular because it can repel all kinds of biting bugs and prevent the spread of diseases carried by these insects. However, DEET can lead to some serious side effects for your health. For instance, it can be toxic to your central nervous system, can cause skin reactions, and is even linked to cancer. The chemical is particularly dangerous to use on your whole body on a regular basis. The difficulty comes when you live in a place where you are often bothered by insects and have no option but to use a repellant.
The good news is that MCT coconut oil is more effective at keeping insects at bay than DEET. For instance, one study found it to be 90 percent effective at repelling mosquitoes. It is also great for keeping dogs free from fleas and ticks. Unlike most treatments, it is non-toxic, meaning there is no problem if the dog licks the oil. Antimicrobial and Antifungal MCT oil as mentioned above is comprised of medium chain fatty acids. The most common of these are capric, caprylic, and lauric acids. Caprylic acid has the most anti-fungal/anti-bacterial properties and also has the mildest taste of the MCT’s. We selected an organic MCT oil high in caprylic acids for use in all our CBD oils for dogs as well as our Topical Healing Formula. Because of the antimicrobial properties in our MCT oil, it helps pets with pesky candida infections and helps to clean the gut of unwanted microbes.
6. Control Blood Sugar Levels
By reducing blood sugar levels, MCT coconut oil may be able to help patients manage diabetes. There is evidence that the oil can even lower your risk of diabetes, such as by preventing insulin resistance. We use MCT oil and ceylon cinnamon together in our “Underbites” CBD dog treats for this very reason.
7. Improve Cholesterol
Saying MCT oil lowers cholesterol isn’t quite accurate. Cholesterol isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it is necessary for vitamin D synthesis and hormone regulation. Recently studies have shown that a diet high in saturated fats from MCT’s increases good HDL cholesterol levels while lowering overall lipid levels. The smaller more dangerous LDL cholesterol molecules were also affected and overall increased in size which is a good thing since smaller and denser LDL molecules triple your risk for heart disease.
8. As an Antimicrobial / Antibacterial / Antiviral
There are 3 different possible fatty acids that comprise MCT’s. They are caprylic acid, capric acid, and lauric acid. All of these fatty acids offer different benefits but most they all offer some degree of protection against bacteria, fungi and even virus’. Caprylic acid has been shown in studies to be a strong antibacterial and promote better gut health. Capric acid is a strong antifungal and immune system booster. Lauric acid has shown the strongest antibacterial properties of the 3 and also offers important antiviral properties. Often a good organic MCT oil will contain a variation of all three of these fatty acids which covers all bases.
9. Weight Loss
There are several reasons why MCT coconut oil can help speed up weight loss. (It can be particularly effective at getting rid of fat around the waist.)
First is that the oil leads the body to release the hormones peptide YY and leptin, which suppresses appetite and make you feel full. In fact, MCT oil has been found to be more effective at this than pure coconut oil. You’ve already seen that the body burns calories from MCTs straight away. Another benefit is the fact that MCTs have 10 percent fewer calories than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) — the types of triglycerides present in olive oil, avocados, and nuts. Yet another reason is that MCTs can help you maintain the correct balance between good and bad bacteria in your gut. This is a great way to promote healthy weight loss. Bear in mind that losing weight with MCT coconut oil is particularly effective when you’re on a ketogenic diet. This involves eating few carbohydrates but plenty of fats. By also taking MCT oil, you’ll keep your body in a fat-burning state.
As you can see, MCT oil is safe to use and there are many health related reasons to consider using MCT for you and your dog. It is easy to see why we chose an organic MCT oil to carry our CBD rich hemp extracts. We use it in our CBD oils, Topical Healing Formula and even in our CBD infused dog treats.
