8 Tips for Growing White Rhino Cannabis: Grower’s Guide
If you have ever wanted to grow your favorite strain, you’re in luck! At WayofLeaf, we have developed hundreds of articles dedicated to providing the best steps and tips to grow cannabis strains. Today’s piece is a growing guide for White Rhino.
One thing that cultivators have learned is that the method of growing weed significantly alters the end result. Therefore, you will likely grow a very different White Rhino strain in soil than a friend would in a hydroponics setup for example.
Tip #1 – Strain Review: How Potent is White Rhino?
White Rhino is almost completely indica with a THC content of approximately 20%, although we have heard of samples hitting the 25% mark! It was bred by Green House Seeds and is a cross of a North American Indica and White Widow . Overall, White Rhino has parentage that consists of landrace strains from South India, Brazil, and Afghanistan. This strain won the runner-up prize at the High Times Cannabis Cup in the Bio-Cup category in 1996.
White Rhino is certainly not a strain for amateurs. The high hits you fast and early, and users tend to experience a cerebral high coupled with a powerful body buzz. It is known as an expensive strain and has strong sedative effects. Along with a major head rush, you will feel happy and invigorated for a couple of hours.
In the medical field, White Rhino is known as an excellent analgesic and could reduce the pain of conditions such as joint pain, toothaches, and migraine headaches. This strain can also be used to treat insomnia, depression, and loss of appetite due to chemotherapy and other chemical treatments. One word of caution: Don’t use too much White Rhino or else you could feel dizzy and dehydrated.
Tip #2 – Difficulty Growing
White Rhino has been described as a ‘grower’s dream’ because of its tendency to yield large quantities of excellent weed. In reality, the grow difficulty of this strain is easy to moderate. Cultivating White Rhino is relatively uncomplicated, and it can grow in most environments without too many issues.
Tip #3 – Best Growing Techniques for White Rhino
White Rhino seldom grows taller than six feet, and that is only when the plant has unlimited root space. If you grow them in 5-gallon containers, they are unlikely to exceed five feet in height. A hydroponic setup tends to help indoor growers get the best yields because the plants become bushier with less space between the nodes.
A hydroponic system means you do not work with soil. Although soil is weed’s natural growing environment, there are several disadvantages:
- You might not be able to recycle soil.
- Soil pH must be constantly monitored.
- The quality of the soil has a huge bearing on the outcome.
- Soil is susceptible to pests.
- Trying to determine the precise level of nutrients is not an exact science.
With a hydroponics system, you use an inert growing medium such as Rockwool or coco coir. It is a good option for experienced growers who understand how to feed their marijuana plants. It is a trickier proposition for novices because you are solely responsible for adding nutrients. A high-quality soil, on the other hand, should give your plants all the nutrients they need.
If you are growing White Rhino indoors, consider a Sea of Green (SOG) setup if you have limited space in the grow room. SOG is a growing technique that forces plants to flower at an early stage. In general, you will force flowering after White Rhino has been in the vegetative stage for just two weeks. Here is a simple SOG overview:
- Germinate seeds or create clones by taking cuttings from a mother plant.
- Expose them to 18+ hours of light per day until they are 12 inches tall.
- Make sure the plants have enough space: No more than two plants per square foot.
- When you see a dense canopy of buds, cut the branches underneath and use them as clones.
- Harvest at your leisure.
Tip #4 – How to Get the Highest White Rhino Yield
Light intensity is one of the main factors when determining yield. White Rhino typically provides a very high yield, but you can maximize it by providing an intense level of light (just not so intense as to cause light burn). If you have a small indoor grow, fluorescent lights such as CFLs will probably get the job done because they will be close to your plants.
An increasing number of growers are using LED lights because they offer a fuller spectrum than the other available options. Make sure you carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. As a rule of thumb, keep LEDs at least 12 inches away. If you are using 3W or 5W models, make sure your plants are at least 18 inches away.
Tip #5 – Best Feeding Options for White Rhino
White Rhino provides huge yields, but that’s because it is a massive eater. Focus on providing lots of Nitrogen during the vegetative stage, but don’t forget Potassium and Phosphorus! Your crop also needs secondary nutrients and micronutrients such as Calcium, Copper, Boron, Magnesium, Zinc, and Sulfur, among others.
If you are using a hydroponics setup, pay attention to the Electrical Conductivity (EC) reading. It is a measure of how strong a nutrient solution is, as well as helping you determine how rich in minerals the water is. The EC reading will be higher the more minerals are in the water. A reading of between 0.8 and 2.0 is ideal for marijuana during its growing cycle.
You can also use Metal Halide (MH) or High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights but make sure they remain at least two feet away from your White Rhino plants. However, the precise distance depends on the size of the bulb. Above all, make sure you pay for a decent cooling or exhaust system to reduce the risk of heat stress and provide fresh CO2 to the plants.
Tip #6 – Should You Grow White Rhino Indoors or Outdoors?
White Rhino is often grown outdoors, and it will provide a higher yield if you can find the right climate . In general, however, it grows smoothly indoors in a well-controlled environment. You will notice that this strain grows fairly short with compressed buds that are covered in glowing white crystals. It produces an extremely strong scent during the flowering period. Therefore, make sure the air in your grow room is well circulated.
Tip #7 – White Rhino Flowering Time: When Should I Harvest?
Indoors, White Rhino flowering time is 9-weeks. This strain provides you with an enormous yield of 32 ounces per square meter. When you grow outdoors, White Rhino yields an astonishing 42 ounces per plant! It should be ready for harvest by the end of September or the beginning of October.
After months of hard work, it is crucial that you harvest your crop at the right moment . The pistil method involves waiting for at least half of the pistils on your plants to change color from white to reddish brown. By the time 70-80% have changed color, your White Rhino strain is probably at its most potent.
The trichome method is arguably the most reliable but involves the use of a magnifying glass such as a jeweler’s loupe. When the trichomes are still clear, the crop is not ready for harvest. Once they turn cloudy, it is time to make a move.
Many experts believe the perfect time for harvesting weed is when half of the trichomes have turned amber, with the other half cloudy. If you wait too long, all of the trichomes turn amber which means the degradation of THC into CBN .
Tip #8 – What is the Best Climate for Growing the White Rhino Strain?
Ideally, you will keep the daytime temperature in the 68-80-degree Fahrenheit range. The key is to ensure consistent temperatures during the day AND at night. Make sure there is no more than a 10-15-degree difference between day and night temperatures; this means lights on and lights off when growing indoors.
White Rhino also prefers a damp climate but make sure it is not overly wet. As long as you prune and trim the plant’s leaves and branches as and when necessary, you shouldn’t have to worry about diseases such as bud rot because this strain has a high level of resistance.
Final Thoughts on White Rhino
If you are a grower with minimal space, White Rhino is a fantastic option. It provides gigantic yields, even if you shorten the growing time with the SOG method. Hydroponics growers have reported yields of almost 1000 grams per plant!
White Rhino is an extremely potent indica, and its effects begin to tell soon after consumption. We don’t recommend using it if you have any tasks to complete for the rest of the day. If you are stressed out in the evening and need something to help you relax, there are few better marijuana strains for the job.
